How to incorporate blogging in the classroom.

Does anyone use blogging in the classroom?
Is it appropriate for younger students?
I have really enjoyed reading other blogs and responding. I feel like I am utilizing so many skills; reading, writing, responding, appropriate use of language, grammar, etc.
I want to have my students blog but I'm not sure how to go about teaching them. They will be in fourth grade and I feel like if I monitor blogging and teach it effectively...this can be very successful!
Who am I kidding? These fourth graders probably already have their own blogging websites!

    Hey Kacie!
I think if they know how to use an address bar, they know how to blog. I wouldn't be surprised if 4th graders had blog sites. I think blogging is a good idea. It's like electronic journaling. Since the internet is a way of life now, I think it would be a great thing if Teachers had a blogging page for their classrooms much like what we are doing now.

  2. Hi, Kacie...

Hmmm...could you use it as part of writing exercise, maybe if you're doing a unit on journaling/diary writing (when discussing dif. forms of writing). I don't know if that's something you do with your 4th graders.
Also, what about doing something like an "information relay." You could give the class a topic and each kid must post an interesting fact about it (that they research on their own) and then the next kid adds on to it with something new...and so on, and so forth. That could be interesting to see what they come up with. You'd have to do some sort of culmination activity to tie it all together, but that could be easily done.
